Thermals: the scientific lowdown

Thermals are the fuel of gliding flight, but there’s more to them than just a load of hot air. Dr. Wayne Angevine from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration explains. He likens thermals to fat trees, with small chaotic roots near the surface and large trunks above. Between the trees is sinking air. The trees tilt and sway […] …read more

10th Ozone Chabre

The 10th Ozone Chabre Open came to a successful close with a week of hot dry weather and thankfully zero rain. Four tasks were set, all of which proved to be interesting and fun.

Andrew Williams won the overall competition, and – proving to not only be good, but also lucky – he won the prize draw and a new Ozone paraglider. Andrew decided to auction the new wing and donate the money to charity, for Parkinsons research. A true gentleman!

Congrats to Jens, Luc, and Jan, who swept the X-Class all flying their Mantra M6s, and to Catherine Bartholdi who took first place in the women’s category flying her Alpina 2. Verena and Ella were close behind, flying the M6 and Alpina 2 respectively.

More info including full results and all task reports can be seen here.
We’d like to send out a huge and heartfelt thanks to the Chabre Vol Libre crew, who have organized 10 brilliant Ozone Chabre competitions. Their tireless efforts and impressive efficiency are the keys to the Ozone Chabre Open’s success, and we are grateful to be able to work with them!

Cheers, from all the Team.

RedBull X-Alps Gets Epic Start

The 2015 RedBull X-Alps has started with a bang, thanks to an alpine heatwave. Pilots have already passed turnpoint 3 and it is a real race! The first two days of the event have proven to be incredible – paraglider pilots all over the Alps are experiencing stellar conditions.

In other news outside the X-Alps race, Alex Robe reached the top spot on the world XC league ranking with a 255km triangle and pilots in Chamonix overflew the summit of Mt Blanc.

For those of you that are not currently circling at a >4000m cloudbase, follow the X-Alps pilots here. For the third straight event, more pilots are flying Ozone in the X-Alps than any other brand. We are very happy to be able to support so many pilots, and will be rooting for them in the coming days.

Cheers from all the Team.
